Cellulite

Cellulite is caused by skin that has deteriorated to a point that buoyant fat cells are able to push into the dermis, the middle layer of the skin, and show through the surface as unsightly lumps and bumps.

One plausible explanation - which also explains why very few men suffer from cellulite - is based on the composition and behaviour of women's fat cells and the connective tissue that holds them in place. Very simply, a woman's connective tissue is very inflexible, so as females gain weight their fat cells expand, and tend to bulge upwards towards the surface of the skin, giving the classic “orange-peel” appearance of cellulite. The bands of fat cells in females is also placed in a vertical formation, making the dimples more obvious and unsightly.

In men, not only is there generally less fat on the thighs, but also the outer skin is thicker and thus obscures what is happening to any surplus fat below. The placement of the cells is also in more diagonal patterns, thus making it quite hard to see visible dimples in the skin, unless the patient is severely overweight, and even then it is not as apparent and unsightly as in females.

What causes Cellulite?

Why is it important to start cellulite treatments as soon as possible?

Cellulite is a progressive condition and if not treated can become a major stumbling block to self-esteem and a healthy body. The best treatment is early intervention. Any treatment modality on its own can make a big difference, but in our eyes it's not sufficient. Cellulite has different forms and grades and thus success at combating cellulite needs a combination of treatments that include lymphatic drainage, improved circulation, reduction of fat cells, stretching of connective tissue and collagen stimulation. The application of good, circulation stimulating products is also extremely beneficial.

How to treat Cellulite

Body Renewal is excited to offer the next step in multi-modality therapy in treating cellulite. By carefully combining excellent,  internationally recognized treatments & cutting edge technologies; we have developed a combination of non-invasive cellulite therapies that is bringing cellulite therapy to a whole new level.

Our cellulite treatment solutions combine the following modalities:

Why do our Cellulite Solutions include Carboxytherapy?

Carboxytherapy has an array of benefits, including:

Improves cellulite by improving the venous insufficiency which causes poor circulation and the build-up of toxins

Improves varicose and spider veins as the problem of venous insufficiency is addressed

Treats localised fat deposits effectively,

Tightens superficial skin with long term collagen stimulation

Improves difficult to treat stretch marks

Carboxytherapy is truly a revolutionary, non-surgical treatment that can deliver dramatic results without surgery in a short space of time. The results of carboxytherapy are simply boosted with the inclusion of the various heat treatments (Radiofrequency).

Classification of Cellulite:

Grade 1

No clinical symptoms, but there are anatomical changes seen under the microscope.

In this case the patient cannot visibly see the cellulite with the naked eye.

Grade 2

The skin shows paleness, lower temperature, and decreased elasticity after compression or muscular contraction. There is no visible "orange peel" roughness to the skin. Additional anatomical changes are detected by microscopic examination.

Grade 3

Visible "orange peel" roughness to the skin is visible at rest. This is the "canonical" grade of cellulite. Thin granulations in the deep levels of the skin can be detected by palpitation. All Grade 2 signs are present, with further anatomical changes, detectable under the microscope

Grade 4

All Grade 3 symptoms are present, with more visible, palpable, and painful lumps present which adhere to deep structures in the skin. The skin has a noticeable dimpled, wavy appearance. Additional microscopic changes are detected. Grade 4 Cellulite is constantly visible to the patient (regardless of whether the patient is sitting, standing or lying down).

Collections of fat and layers of cellulite located in the most inconvenient locations can ruin your best efforts at looking good. They can dramatically affect how you feel about yourself and your appearance; especially when you head for the beach.

How can one minimize cellulite?

Cellulite is one of those things that is caused by so many factors and really I don’t think it’s something that you’re just going to cure. It’s something you’re going to need to manage and prevent as much as possible. I feel there are 3 main parts to the management of this condition.

1) Your diet and your exercise. You need to follow a healthy eating plan, taking in lots of water and good wholesome foods that haven’t all come out of tin cans and polystyrene!

2) Your homecare routine. Getting enough sleep every day. Getting in enough water every day. Applying good products to the skin that look after the skin’s integrity and give the skin some good detoxifying actives. Also take good vitamins, minerals and anti-oxidants on a daily basis.

3) Professional treatment. If your budget allows, there are some amazing treatments that can help you to improve and to a great extent, treat and get rid of a lot of your cellulite. You need to remember that we live in a time where everything is processed and polluted and full of toxins. So we are always going to have to battle the effects of all this junk we are bombarded with every day.

Is there an affordable solution to cellulite on the curves? Been struggling for a long time now.

It is essential to know that there are many reasons why cellulite form – Hormones, circulation, lifestyle etc. We at the Renewal Institute treat the cosmetic concern as well as looking for the cause and rectifying that.

Cellulite also comes in different grades, so depending on the severity of your cellulite, our Doctors will do a thorough consultation and tailor a customised treatment program for your specific needs, condition, circumstances and budget. The package can include the following treatments: Subcision, Mesotherapy, Carboxytherapy and Radiofrequency. With this treatment package, the Doctor can recommend supplements & topical homecare as well as give you lifestyle advice.

The prices of the treatments vary depending on the specific procedures prescribed, and treatments can be done every 1 – 2 weeks, depending on the type of treatment and your budget.

Your first step will be to book an appointment with one of our doctors, so they can analyse the area and make their recommendations. Our consultation fee is R600, payable in advance to secure your booking.

I am 39 years old and have cellulite on my thighs. I have used numerous body products. What else can I do and use to make it go away?

Cellulite is a circulatory disorder that can be caused by various factors. Hormones, estrogen specifically, play a big role in the formation of cellulite which is why women tend to get more than men. Dehydration, a sedentary lifestyle and a lack of exercise can all contribute to making this condition worse. Most topical creams for cellulite work by increasing circulation, which is perfect, the problem is that creams can only penetrate to a certain point. What you need are in-clinic treatments to speed up circulation in that specific area as well as increase the metabolism of the fat cells in that area. Carboxytherapy combined with Radiofrequency has been known to be the best option. These treatments can be done every 2 -4 weeks and results can be seen within 6-8 treatments.

I go to gym and I have a problem with cellulite what can i use to reduce cellulite?

Unfortunately, treating cellulite is not as easy as, “eating right, gym and drink lots of water”… Sure, those things will most certainly make a big difference and will definitely help you manage the condition, but there is a lot more to it than that. There are hormonal influences involved and also restrictions in blood and lymph circulation. For some people, the problem is not that severe and simply fixing diet, exercise and water intake is enough… but for MANY this is simply not the case. In a lot of cases, you need intervention with active products (and I’m not talking about a cellulite cream you can quickly go buy in a supermarket), AND the inclusion of active cellulite treatments. This could mean incorporating things like Ultra Massage (which is a special type of light therapy), Velashape, or Carboxy Therapy. There are a host of things that can be done, depending on your specific needs. If your problem is really difficult and you’re not responding to diet and exercise and water intake, then I would suggest you make an appointment with one of our Doctors at Skin Renewal and let’s put together the best possible prescription for your specific needs.

If Skin Tightening didn't show any results, how well will Thread-lifts really work & will you be able to see the thread after years? What can one expect from the treatment? Finally how do I choose a reputable aesthetic doctor if my Dermatologist doesn't do thread lifting?

Threads are a unique way of regenerating, lifting and tightening the skin on the face as well as the body. Common treatment areas include the forehead, cheeks and jowls and neck area. On the body, we can successfully improve the appearance of cellulite and loose skin on the abdomen and upper thighs and upper arms (commonly known as batwing arms).

It is essential to know that we offer 2 types of threads at our clinics, PDO threads and Silhouette Soft® threads. Embedded PDO threading is a treatment that involves the use of different-length sutures that are specially placed in the hypodermis of the skin, providing a lifting and smoothing effect. The various thread lengths give the Skin Renewal doctor a wide range of treatment options. The threads dissolve naturally over months while synthesising new collagen production in the treated area.
This treatment allows the skin of the face or body to present smoother and firmer. The PDO threading treatment is well tolerated by patients as only local anaesthetic is required. Upon consultation, the doctor will analyse the area and recommend the right number of threads necessary to get the desired results.

The Silhouette Soft® threads or the newly developed Anchor Max threads are fantastic alternatives to a surgical face-lift as they not only lift your skin but also improve the quality of your skin. It is totally safe, and one can get back to resume your daily activities right after the procedure. The components of the thread are totally re-absorbable in 9-18 months.

Your first step is to book an appointment with one of our doctors, so they can analyse the area and make their recommendations. In this consultation, all our treatment options, expectations, budget and home care will be discussed.

I have tried so many cellulite reduction creams and lotions ranging from very expensive to reasonably priced, and absolutely nothing works, in fact I notice the cellulite on my thighs getting worse each year. I have also tried Endermology - to no avail. Is there a permanent solution?

Cellulite is a lifestyle condition, so unfortunately it is something you will have to treat, manage and maintain for the rest of your life. The person who finds a permanent cure for cellulite is going to be a very rich person indeed! Unfortunately, cellulite occurs as a result of so many lifestyle factors that we are exposed to every single day (some voluntarily and some we have no control over), and there’s no way we can ever just switch all those things off EG; Smoke, pollution, hormones, poor diet, lack of water intake, poor circulatory function, build-up of metabolic waste and the list goes on! So the combination of treatments, topical preparations, diet and exercise can all certainly help to reduce the condition and improve its appearance, but we will never be able to simply cure it or just take it away. I think using a combination of these and ensuring you are having the BEST treatments and using an active topical homecare product can certainly make a huge difference. We get great results in combining Titania and Carboxytherapy together with the use of a good topical product. The diet and exercise and increased water intake also help to maintain your results and keep the body functioning better.

Does water intake help with cellulite?

Increasing your water intake will certainly help with flushing and detoxing. Detoxing will certainly help you with treating cellulite, but you have to remember that taking in more water is only a very small piece of the recipe. You have to look at your diet, your lifestyle and making sure you’re getting all the vitamins and minerals you need. Even then, you’ll find that this isn’t going to “cure” your condition. We are so exposed to pollution, and all sorts of preservatives and things that cause toxins in our systems that you need to make sure you’re going for treatments and using products that will assist you in this. Using a good active product and going for regular lymphatic drainage treatments or if you have the means, going for Radio Frequency treatments such as Vela Shape and Accent, and even Carboxy therapy are all really great options.

I struggle with cellulite what can I do to reduce it?

If I had a one line answer to this problem I’d probably be the richest person alive!
